Tan Loc Islet sits in the Hau River, more than 40 kilometers from central Can Tho. Unlike a single ticketed attraction, Tan Loc is a large inhabited river island where orchards, aquaculture, old houses and family-run visitor sites are spread across the local community.
It is worth considering if you want to see a quieter, more agricultural side of Can Tho beyond the floating market and central riverfront.
Current visitor experiences include fruit gardens, coconut gardens, Tran Ba The Ancient House and small local producers. Because these places operate independently, a little planning makes a visit much easier.
Where Is Tan Loc Islet?
Tan Loc Islet is in Tan Loc Ward, Can Tho City, in the Hau River. Older local references also call Tan Loc “Cu Lao Tam Tinh,” or the Three-Province Islet, reflecting its historical position near Can Tho, Dong Thap and An Giang.
The island covers more than 3,200 hectares and remains closely connected with fruit farming, aquaculture and riverside livelihoods. It is noticeably farther from central Can Tho than attractions around Ninh Kieu, Cai Rang or Binh Thuy.
Published local sources put the ferry crossing at roughly 10-15 minutes. This is the ferry time only, not the total journey from central Can Tho.

What Is Tan Loc Islet Like?
The first thing to understand is that Tan Loc is not one enclosed tourist park.
It is a working river-island community. Homes, orchards, farms, aquaculture areas, religious sites and small visitor businesses share the same landscape.
Visitors move between individual places rather than entering through one main gate.
Agriculture remains an important part of life on the island. Fruit orchards, fish farming and other household-scale activities are part of the local economy, while tourism has gradually developed around these existing livelihoods.
That makes Tan Loc most interesting when approached as a place to understand local river and agricultural life rather than simply another attraction to check off a list.
What to See on Tan Loc Islet

Co Diep Guava Garden
Co Diep Guava Garden is one of the more established visitor sites on Tan Loc.
The family has developed tourism around its guava farm, combining garden visits with food and drinks made from locally grown fruit. The trees are managed in different cycles, helping the garden produce guavas across much of the year rather than during only one short harvest period.
The garden currently operates as an individual visitor site, so it is still a good idea to confirm opening arrangements before making a special trip.
If orchard experiences are one of the main reasons you are visiting the Mekong Delta, our Can Tho Fruit Gardens Guide gives a broader overview of garden experiences around the city.
Tan Loc Coconut Garden
Tan Loc Coconut Garden in the Phuoc Loc area is one of the island’s visitor sites. The garden is built around an existing coconut orchard, with small canals where visitors can row a boat and enjoy fresh coconut.
Visitor experiences have developed around several local gardens, including areas around Phuoc Loc. These are generally simple, small-scale experiences built around the existing garden rather than purpose-built tourist attractions.
Depending on the garden, visitors may spend time walking among the coconut trees, having fresh coconut or learning more about local agricultural life.
Visitor arrangements can vary by household, so check before traveling if a particular garden is important to your plans.
Tran Ba The Ancient House
For travelers interested in heritage, Tran Ba The Ancient House is one of the most notable stops on Tan Loc.
The house was built around the 1930s and reflects both Southern Vietnamese traditions and Western-influenced architectural details. It also provides a glimpse into the lives of some of the more prosperous families who lived on the islet during the early twentieth century.

The house operates separately from the island’s gardens and other attractions, so visiting hours should be checked individually.
Other Gardens and Local Producers
Tan Loc has more than just the three better-known stops above.
Other places associated with local tourism on Tan Loc include Thay Thong Jabuticaba Garden, Ut Anh’s fish-sauce and dried-fish production site, Sau Tia’s local fruit-liquor business, rambutan gardens and smaller ecological gardens. Visitor arrangements at household businesses can change, so confirm before making a special trip.
These smaller household businesses can change their visitor arrangements over time. Do not assume every place accepts walk-in visitors every day.
If there is a specific garden or producer you want to visit, confirm that it is currently receiving guests before traveling from central Can Tho.
How to Get to Tan Loc Islet
Tan Loc requires more planning than attractions in central Can Tho.
From downtown, travelers head north toward the Tan Loc area before crossing the Hau River by ferry. The island is more than 40 kilometers from central Can Tho, so it works better as a planned excursion than a quick addition to a city-center itinerary.
The map below uses Lotte Mart Can Tho as a convenient central-city reference point; your actual travel time will depend on where you are staying.
If traveling independently, confirm the ferry crossing and your return transport before leaving.
This is particularly useful if you plan to visit several household attractions across the island rather than only one destination.
How Long Should You Spend on Tan Loc?
From central Can Tho, allow at least half a day.
Tan Loc is a large island, the attractions are spread out and reaching it includes both a road transfer and a ferry crossing.
There is little benefit in trying to visit every garden.
For most travelers, a more comfortable plan is to choose two or three different experiences, such as:
- one fruit or coconut garden;
- Tran Ba The Ancient House;
- one additional local agricultural or food experience.
If you want to explore more of northern Can Tho, Thuan Hung Rice Paper Village offers a traditional craft experience, while Bang Lang Stork Garden focuses more on rural scenery and birdlife.
When to Visit Tan Loc Islet
There is no single fruit season that applies to every garden on Tan Loc.
Different crops follow different growing cycles, and individual farmers manage their orchards in different ways. Some gardens may have fruit available for much of the year, while others are more seasonal.
For that reason, the most useful question is not simply:
“What is the best month to visit Tan Loc?”
Instead, ask:
“What do I want to see, and what is available at that particular garden when I visit?”
If fruit picking or a specific crop matters to you, check with the garden shortly before your trip.
Morning visits can also be more comfortable if you expect to spend much of the day outdoors.
Is Tan Loc Islet Worth Visiting?
Tan Loc is a good fit for travelers who want to go beyond Can Tho’s most familiar attractions.
It may especially appeal to people interested in:
- fruit orchards and agricultural landscapes;
- family-run local businesses;
- old Southern Vietnamese houses;
- quieter riverside communities;
- photography;
- slower travel.
It is less convenient for travelers with very limited time.
Because Tan Loc is more than 40 kilometers from central Can Tho and requires a ferry crossing, first-time visitors staying in the city for only a few hours may prefer to prioritize attractions closer to the center.
That does not make Tan Loc less worthwhile. It simply suits a different type of trip.
Practical Things to Know Before You Go
Tan Loc does not have one island-wide entrance ticket.
Individual gardens, heritage houses and visitor businesses have their own opening arrangements and, where applicable, their own charges.
Because this is a residential and agricultural community, visitors should also distinguish between places that actively welcome tourists and ordinary homes, farms or work areas that remain private.
Before leaving central Can Tho:
- confirm that the places you want to visit are open;
- check the ferry and return transport;
- allow extra travel time;
- bring sun and rain protection;
- avoid planning too many stops in one day.
A little preparation makes the experience considerably easier.
Tan Loc Islet or Tan Phong Islet?
They are different destinations.
Tan Loc Islet is in Can Tho City on the Hau River.
Tan Phong Islet is in the Cai Be area and is a separate destination. If you are comparing the two while planning your Mekong Delta trip, see our Tan Phong Islet guide.
The similar names make them easy to confuse when saving map locations or researching itineraries.
