Start with the Kind of Forest Day You Want
Short Forest Walks
-
The short Heritage Tree forest walk is a compact route inside Con Dao National Park. It includes forest walking, nature interpretation and a visit to a 400-year-old Vietnam Heritage Tree. This route works well for first-time visitors, mixed-fitness groups or travelers with limited time.

- The So Ray Plantation viewpoint route has a slightly different character. It still keeps the route short, but adds a viewpoint element at around 250 meters above sea level. The scenery opens toward Con Dao town, the forest and the ocean, so it suits travelers who want forest atmosphere with a wider landscape view.

These routes are not designed for travelers looking for a long trekking day. Their value is in a calm introduction to the forest.
Forest Routes with Coastal Scenery
-
The Ong Cau Beach forest and coastal route combines the Environmental Education Center, forest walking, a Heritage Tree visit and time near Ong Cau Beach. When conditions allow, swimming or snorkeling may be possible, but the route should be understood mainly as a forest-and-coast experience.

-
The Dat Tham and Bang Beach full-day trek is longer and more active. It includes forest hiking, Bang Beach, Dat Tham Beach, lunch at a ranger station and a return along an old local road. This route suits travelers who want to spend most of the day outdoors and do not mind a slower, more physical rhythm.

Forest, Lagoon and Sea in One Route
Summit and Island Viewpoint Routes
-
The Nui Chua summit route follows a longer structure through Con Dao National Park toward the Nui Chua / King Mountain summit, above 500 meters. It suits travelers who are comfortable with a 9-hour outdoor route and want a mountain viewpoint on the main island.

-
The Ba Island Love Peak hike has a different setting. It involves a transfer to Ben Dam Harbor, a boat ride to Ba Island, then a forest hike to Love Peak at 399 meters. The route combines island scenery, forest terrain and summit views.

How to Choose by Fitness and Time
-
Travelers who rarely hike should start with a shorter forest route. Heritage Tree and So Ray give enough forest context without asking for a full day outdoors.
-
Ong Cau fits travelers who are comfortable with a few hours of walking and want a route that connects forest and coast.
-
Dat Tham and Bamboo Lagoon are better compared as full-day nature routes. Dat Tham leans toward forest and beach scenery. Bamboo Lagoon gives a wider mix of beach walking, forest, lagoon and sea context.
-
Nui Chua and Love Peak are the routes to compare for elevation. Nui Chua stays on the main island and has a longer mountain structure. Love Peak adds the feeling of an offshore island route on Ba Island.
What Not to Expect
-
Not every forest route in Con Dao includes the same landscape. Some routes are mostly forest. Some include beaches. Some include viewpoints. Some involve boat transfer. Some take most of the day.
-
Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Long-tailed monkeys, black squirrels, reptiles and birds live in natural habitats, so sightings depend on timing, weather, season, noise and luck.
-
A forest route with beach access does not always mean swimming or snorkeling will happen. Weather, sea conditions and operating decisions can affect what is possible on the day.
-
A short route and a full-day route should not be compared only by destination name. Compare them by time, terrain, physical effort and the kind of experience you want.
What to Prepare
-
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. Trails can be humid, uneven or slippery after rain.
-
Choose light, breathable clothing and bring sun protection for open sections. Even forest routes may include beaches, viewpoints or boat transfers.
-
Bring insect repellent, personal medication and a small day bag. For routes with beach or sea sections, bring swimwear, a towel and a dry bag if needed.
-
For full-day routes, prepare for heat, slower movement and changing outdoor conditions. The route will be more enjoyable when you are not rushing from one stop to another.
Responsible Forest Travel Notes
-
Con Dao’s forests are part of a protected island ecosystem. Stay on permitted trails and follow guide or ranger instructions.
-
Do not feed monkeys or other wildlife. Feeding animals changes their behavior and can create safety problems for both visitors and wildlife.
-
Do not collect plants, seeds, shells, rocks or other natural objects. Keep noise low when possible and carry out your trash.
-
A forest route should leave no trace beyond your footprints.
